How to Save on Groceries: Tops Dollar Doubler weeks using Sale Items, Combo Deals and manufacturer coupons

How to save on groceries

How to Save on Groceries at Tops on Dollar Doubler Weeks

The best way to save money at Tops is to buy items in their combo deals. Of course there will not be much you can cook a dinner out of when doing these deals but you can slowly stock up on items you know your family uses. I always stock up on Dollar Doubler weeks.

I decided to post this because most people really do not realize how much sale and coupon matching saves you on groceries. I read many comments on Social Media that Tops deals are a hoax. You have to pay attention to prices, coupons and combo deals but we do that for you so you can see how much you can save. I did not do the shopping 2 weeks ago and Ilet the love of my life, Vince, go shopping. He did great and bought what we needed at the time that was on sale and stocked up on some freezer things and bought generic but went with no coupons and no meal plan! He shopped at Aldi’s and Tops. $300 later and shelves not stocked, I was running to store for items we needed within a weeks time. Hence, that will not happen again any time soon :)

Some key factors on How to Save on Groceries:
- you have to know what you have in your pantry, freezer, and refrigerator to know what to buy. I meal plan from my pantry and freezer and only buy perishabes and sale items on my weekly shopping trips
- Every item on my list was on sale. The best time to shop at Tops is Saturday night. You can get the benefit of sale ending and sale beginning AND if you go at around 9:30 or 10 the store is practically empty except for workers stocking shelves for Sunday. Unfortunately, I do not get to do it that often, but I always try to on Dollar Doubler weeks.
- I pre plan my Dollar Doubler deals into separate transactions before I go to the store. Use our shopping list, check the items you want to buy per transaction and print per transaction. See example below.

how to save on groceries

- All of these transactions used coupons from the Tops Coupon Matchups I posted last week.
- I plan each transaction to be over $20, with items I need for the week or for stock up and each to use (4) Dollar Doublers. I could have slimmed them down to save more but these are realistic items we use on a regular basis and items I needed. You can not do all of these transactions on the same day. Ideally, Tops would like to only have one transaction per day. I have had cashiers allow me to do 2-3 transactions on one trip but they do not have to allow that, so it is best to plan out your week and go to the store multiple times during Dollar Doubler week.

- Mistakes happen so dont get overly obsessed in making things perfect. In just these 6 transactions both myself and the cashier made errors. I bought 6 items on the listerine deal instead of only 5 AND the cashier didnt scan 2 of my listerine coupons but he did scan one of my Visine coupons twice! I only had 4 Dole coupons instead of 6 and I was short on Bubba Burger coupons. My store was out of the candy I had planned on in one of the gas point deals so I just bought another item in the combo deal (coke deal) to make sure I received the 20 ppoints. Be flexible and you will still save money! The register also did not credit my free milk so I have to go to customer service in next 7 days. BUT with all those errors, I still saved 61%.

Rather than typing all the coupons, I took a picture of my receipt showing coupons used on each transaction

That is a savings of 61%!

Granted, the items on the list are not the healthiest but these are items I keep on hand for our boys to cook themselves and everyday pricing on convenience foods are outrageous!. My boys are not great chefs, nor do they want to learn! We all drink way to much soda so I could go broke buying soda when it is not on sale!  I will spend another $20 this week on veggies and fruit so I will go even further over my  budget but next week I will make up for it and not buy as much :)

Hope this helps you get the idea of how to save on groceries using Tops Dollar Doublers. You can do this on items you use and need by using our weekly Tops Coupon Matchups and Shopping List.

Please do not hesitate to ask questions in the comments of any of our posts. Although working during the day, I do answer all comments in the evening–good or bad :)

Welcome to Coupons For Your Family!

My name is Denise and I am a fulltime working mom who got very frustrated when our 4 boys started to become teenagers. I could not keep enough food in the house and run to the store 3-4 times a week and our wallet sure couldn’t keep up either!  Our bills were easily $200-$250 week to keep up with groceries and all the household expenses! Our bill is 50-70% less using coupons and sometimes even FREE!

Many people ask me how to start couponing, where to get coupons and how to save 50-70% on your household and grocery bills so here goes!

Coupons For Your Family has a lot of content and can tend to be overwhelming!

How to change the Zip Code to see more coupons on Coupons.com

Thank you for visiting! Make sure to get the Free Favado Grocery List App here and sign up for Daily Coupons, Freebies and Deals here to start saving on everyday expenses immediately!

Have you noticed all the new changes on Coupons.com recently?

1) They have been adding a lot more coupons! Coupons.com has some great coupons to print right now–the food category has almost 80 coupons to print!

2) In addition to the coupons, they are having a daily iPad Giveaway !!

Make sure to enter to win an Ipad here

3) They have also changed the look of the site. To find more coupons rather than using page, you now have to click the show more coupons at bottom of page

4) One of the biggest changes on their site is that you no longer have a zip code option on the first page.

To change your zip code do the following:

1) you will need to click on Local Coupons in menu bar
2) then enter your zip code.
3) then click on the coupons link again and you will get that set of coupons

The most popular zip codes to use are:

30087, 62896, 77477, 12345, and I always use my local zip code 14219 to get the regional  brand  coupons so make sure to check your local zip code also!

Right now the difference in total savings between zip codes are almost $70 ($327 up to $397) so make sure to check all coupons and zip codes here

Preparing for Tops Shopping Trip 4/1

Thank you for visiting! Make sure to get the Free Favado Grocery List App here and sign up for Daily Coupons, Freebies and Deals here to start saving on everyday expenses immediately!

I wanted to share how I prepare for a multiple transaction trip to Tops. This same method can be used for any store.

I first use the printable list that we offer in our match-ups by checking off the items I am going to buy and then print it. When you check an item a box comes up in the bottom right of your screen to show your list and print or email your list.

Then I pull my coupons  from my dated file folders from newspaper inserts, cut them out or I print the ones I need and put them with the proper list.

In todays case, there was an extra step to make sure I was using (4) Tops $1 Doubler coupons which were limited to 4 per transaction.
Even without the $1 Doublers, I still like to break out the transactions so I can watch to make sure I am getting the proper Gas points or Instant savings. At the drugstores when you do multiple transactions you can use your ECBs, RRs or + Up rewards on the next transactions also.

I usually have one large transaction at the end which will also include the items I need for the week such as produce, meats and misc items with coupons.

In this instance I broke them out into 5 transactions and then combined the 4th one with the large end transaction becuase I did not have Dollar doublers in the last transaction.

I make any notes right on the list. In the picture below the transaction only had 3 Tops $1 doublers in it so I added the 2 Dutch noodles and another $1 Doubler. I have items underlined in transaction that I am buying. If I have to adjust the scenario I put on the site then I underline items I am getting from the scenario and hand write the different item

Then I use the envelopes I save from bills etc (that would get thrown out) to put my coupons in. I staple the envelope right to the list (behind it). Then I do not have coupons falling all
over and I can read my list right in my cart.

I put the items in my cart by transaction as I am shopping so I am referring to my lists often which is why I put the coupons in an envelope.

When I am in the checkout line, it is easiest to put the smallest transactions first, use the dividers between each transaction, AND put your list with coupons right on the items. I put them between items so they do not fall over etc. This way you can have all ready and waiting for cashier. Also this method allows you to make sure you do not forget to give coupons to cashier!! It is very easy to get flustered in line with all going on. This also allows for you to get all on the conveyor so you can watch the cashier scan your coupons so none are missed.

I keep my store loyalty cards all on my smartphone using Card Star- a free app and I always use a debit or credit card. So both are in my hand ready for next transaction. This avoids any fumbling for store card or money and allows you to look at your receipts to do a quick look over while still watching further transactions being scanned.

It may take me an hour to prepare for a multiple transaction trip but it is well worth it. The line moves much quicker, you will not feel flustered or unorganized and I actually had all in my cart and through checkout within 45 minutes.

I hope this helps! Some may think it is all too much but doing this saved me $141.72 today. I would have spent an hour in the store shopping without a list or coupons. So for the extra 45 minutes it is well worth my time:)

There are many ways to coupon  and by no means is this the only way people are doing it. This has just become habit for me and it is the least time consuming for me.
Adjust this method to be comfortable for you.

Use this as a guideline: print our matchups, adjust items you need or want to stock up on(our list does have a spot to type in items you need also), pull or print your coupons and go the store to save!

Changes in Couponing??

Thank you for visiting! Make sure to get the Free Favado Grocery List App here and sign up for Daily Coupons, Freebies and Deals here to start saving on everyday expenses immediately!

I am not an extreme couponer as I wrote in Extreme Couponing vs Everyday Couponing. Will I buy extra papers, coupons on Ebay, or coupons from a clipping service such as Coupons By Dede or Coupon Clipper? Sure will if I know there is a coupon for an item that my family uses an abundance of. Do I get $1000 worth of groceries for $50 –no I do not because I do not have the time (or patience to be honest). Do I save 50-70-% off on my grocery bill every week–yes I do and that is from buying 2 papers, getting my grandma’s inserts and printing what coupons I need and filling in with online purchased coupons. Do I get free items from Drugstores using their reward cards and coupons–yes I do but I go to these drugstores every week and their items are limited from 1-4 items.

My point in this post is that you do not have to be an Extreme Couponer to make a huge dent in your weekly household spending. Changes are coming about in the coupon world and I do not think they will be good for consumers…

There have been subtle changes in the way coupons are being issued because of the large amounts of products being bought for close to nothing on the Extreme Couponing show.  Manufacturers have and will cut back on the amount of coupons being issued and will monitor how the Newspaper Inserts are getting to end users. Take a look at the article the Frugal Makes Cents linked on her blog-Change Coming for Coupon Buying. This article is just the beginning of manufacturers pulling back on how there inserts are getting into end users hands. Manufacturers are already limiting 4 coupons per like item.  Now they are trying to stop having them purchased online. What will be next??

Digital coupons are becoming more popular and there is a limit of one use per item. I do use some digital coupons on my phone but not all that much. I think of the digital coupon as an extra such as Upromise and Cellfire and Target. Will coupons all become digital so they can be more closely monitored??

If you coupon and just buy the extra papers, you will still come out ahead of the game but my concern is that manufacturers are going to put less and less in the inserts.

What are your thoughts on the changing world of coupons??
